Are Kakarikis Good Pets? Let’s Find Out!

If you’ve ever looked at a parrot and thought, "Wow, you’re cute! But are you more trouble than you’re worth?" – then you’re in the right place.
Let’s talk about Kakarikis! These little bundles of feathers are known for their playful personalities, but are they actually good pets? Let’s dive in and find out if they’re the right fit for your home!

What Exactly Are Kakarikis?

Kakarikis (also known as the New Zealand parakeet) are small, vibrant parrots with a lot of energy packed into their tiny frames. They come in a variety of colors, but you’ll most often see the green ones with a splash of red or yellow on their faces – they really know how to wear color!

But, they’re not just pretty faces. These parrots are full of personality. If you want a bird that’s always chirping, hopping around, and demanding attention – a Kakariki might be just what you need.

Are Kakarikis Good Pets?

Now, the real question: Are Kakarikis good pets? Let’s break it down.

1. Friendly and Social?
Yes! Kakarikis are like that friend who can’t sit still – they’re always ready for an adventure. These birds are pretty social and enjoy interacting with their humans. They’ll come to you for attention, but they’re not usually “clingy” (they’re a bit independent, too). So, if you want a bird that’s friendly but not constantly on your shoulder, this could be a perfect match.

2. Low Maintenance?
Kakarikis are fairly low maintenance compared to other parrots. They don’t need constant hand-holding (or wing-holding) and can entertain themselves with toys or a good old-fashioned bird bath. However, like all pets, they do require time and attention – but they don’t need to be babied 24/7. They’ll be happy as long as they get regular playtime and mental stimulation.

3. Intelligent?
Absolutely. Kakarikis are pretty clever little birds. They can learn to do tricks, talk a little, and figure out how to open up their cages if you're not careful! But this intelligence can sometimes get them into mischief. Think of them as the mischievous younger sibling – they love exploring, which can sometimes mean they get into things they shouldn’t!

4. Noisy or Quiet?
Here’s the kicker – these birds aren’t shy. Kakarikis love to sing and chirp, and they can get pretty loud, especially if they’re feeling extra chatty that day. They’re not quite as noisy as larger parrots like African Greys or Macaws, but they will definitely let you know when they’re happy, upset, or just bored. So, if you’re looking for a pet that won’t wake up the entire neighborhood at 6 AM, maybe a Kakariki isn’t for you. But if you love bird songs, they’ll be your personal concert!

5. Are They Good with Other Pets or Kids?
Kakarikis are generally good with other pets and kids, but keep in mind that they’re small and fragile. If you have other pets (especially cats or dogs), you’ll need to supervise their interactions. As for kids, they can be wonderful companions, but be sure the little ones know how to treat them gently. A Kakariki is playful, but it’s not a toy – and that beak can give a gentle nip if it feels threatened!

The Verdict: Should You Get a Kakariki?

If you’re looking for a playful, intelligent, and energetic parrot with a splash of personality, then yes, Kakarikis make great pets! They’re ideal for people who want a parrot that’s not too big, not too demanding, and not too noisy (unless they’re in a chatty mood). With the right care, they can be loyal, loving companions that bring a lot of joy to your home.

Just make sure you have enough time to give them attention, and be prepared for a little noise and a lot of love!
