Puppy Growth Stages: How to Tell When Your Puppy is Fully Grown

Wondering when your little furball will finally stop growing? Puppies go through several growth stages, each with its unique traits and milestones.
Here’s a handy guide to understanding the stages of puppy growth and knowing when your pup is likely to reach full size.
  1. Neonatal Stage (0-2 Weeks)
In the first two weeks, puppies are like tiny potatoes—eyes closed, no teeth, and they rely on their mom for everything. They’re growing fast but won’t be winning any races just yet!
  2. Transitional Stage (2-4 Weeks)
At this stage, they begin opening their eyes, learning to walk (or at least wobble), and interacting a bit with their littermates. It’s adorable, and it’s a sign they’re on their way!
  3. Socialization Stage (3-12 Weeks)
This is when they really start to look like puppies! Social skills develop, and they become more active and curious. Growth is rapid, especially in small breeds that can reach half their adult weight by 12 weeks.
  4. Juvenile Stage (3-6 Months)
From 3 to 6 months, most puppies have tons of energy (maybe too much). Their growth rate slows a bit, but they’ll keep filling out and refining their features. Most breeds are about 75% grown by 6 months.
  5. Adolescence (6-18 Months)
Yes, puppies have a “teenage” phase! They’ll keep growing, although it’s more gradual. This is also the time when they test boundaries and explore their personalities.
  6. Adulthood (1-2 Years)
When they reach this stage, they’ve achieved full growth in height and weight. Smaller breeds mature faster (around 1 year), while larger breeds take longer (up to 2 years).

When Are They Fully Grown?

The age at which a puppy reaches full size varies. Smaller breeds hit full maturity between 10-12 months, while medium breeds generally finish growing at about 12-16 months. Larger breeds can take a whopping 18-24 months to fully mature! So if you’ve got a tiny puppy or a gentle giant, be prepared for different timelines.

Remember, every puppy is unique and may not fit perfectly into a timeline. So enjoy each stage, from the wobbly walks to the big bark!
