Puppy Feeding Guidelines: How to Keep Your Pup Happy and Healthy

Feeding a puppy isn’t just about filling their bowl – it’s about setting them up for a lifetime of health and happiness!
Puppies grow fast, so their food needs to provide the right balance of nutrients, proteins, and calories. Here’s a simple guide to help you make mealtime the best time of their day.

1. How Often to Feed

Puppies have small tummies but big appetites, so they need frequent meals. Generally:
  • 0-3 months: 4 meals a day
  • 3-6 months: 3 meals a day
  • 6-12 months: 2 meals a day
Adjust this as they get older, and watch how they respond – some pups might seem like bottomless pits, but portion control is key!

2. What to Feed

Look for food that’s specifically labeled for puppies – these are designed with the right nutrients for their growth. You’ll want a mix of proteins for muscle development, fats for energy, and calcium for those growing bones. Some vets recommend kibble because it’s balanced and easy on young teeth, but a little wet food as a treat can add some excitement!

3. Portion Sizes

Follow the feeding guidelines on the puppy food packaging, but remember – each puppy is different! Start with the recommended portion, but if they’re still acting hungry or seem to be gaining too much weight, adjust as needed. And remember, table scraps can be a slippery slope – most human foods aren’t puppy-friendly!

4. Hydration

Fresh water should be available at all times. Puppies can get dehydrated quickly, especially when they’re running around like crazy, so keep that water bowl filled up!

5. Healthy Treats & Training

Treats are a great way to reward good behavior, but go easy on them. Small, healthy treats are best – think of them as puppy candy!

6. Watch for Food Reactions

If you notice any unusual behavior after meals, such as scratching, lethargy, or stomach troubles, consult your vet. Some puppies can be sensitive to certain foods.

Taking care of a puppy’s nutrition might seem like a lot to chew, but it’s worth it for a happy, healthy dog!
