What toys do your African Greys actually enjoy?

Hi everyone,,
I recently joined and I’m learning a lot from reading through the posts here, so I thought I’d finally make my first thread 😄

I have an African Grey and I’m trying to figure out what toys he actually likes instead of just what looks good in the store. I’ve bought a few colorful hanging toys and bells, but honestly, he seems more interested in bottle caps and cardboard than the expensive stuff 🤣

Right now, his favorite “toy” is literally a cardboard toilet paper roll with a little paper stuffed inside. He’ll spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to destroy it like it personally offended him.

I wanted to ask:

  • What toys do your Greys genuinely enjoy?
  • Do they prefer wooden chew toys or shredding toys?
  • Has anyone tried making DIY toys at home, and are they actually safe?
I’d love to hear what your birds are obsessed with and maybe get some ideas so I can keep mine entertained (and save my furniture 😅).
Looking forward to reading your replies!

That’s such a relatable post 😂 African Greys are experts at ignoring expensive toys and loving “trash” instead!

Most Greys genuinely prefer shredding toys over fancy ones – cardboard, paper cups, palm leaves, untreated wood blocks, and paper-filled rolls are huge hits.

DIY toys are totally safe as long as you avoid glue, ink-heavy cardboard, staples, or treated wood. If it’s plain cardboard, paper, or bird-safe wood, you’re good!

So far, you’re doing great, if he loves destroying that roll, you’ve already found his favorite kind of play lol 😄
Would love to see what other people’s Greys are obsessed with too!
