New African Grey owner here – what are your daily care routines?

Hey grey community👋
I’m new to this forum and also a fairly new African Grey owner. I’ve had my grey for a few months now and I’m honestly amazed at how smart and emotional these birds are.

I wanted to ask how you all manage your daily care routines? Right now I’m trying to build a proper schedule for my bird – things like feeding times, cage cleaning, out-of-cage time, training, and just bonding in general.

So far, I’m giving a mix of pellets, fresh veggies and a little fruit. I also try to let my grey out for a few hours a day to play and explore (supervised of course). But sometimes I worry if I’m doing enough – especially when it comes to mental stimulation and preventing boredom.

Do you guys rotate toys often? How many hours a day do you usually interact with your greys? And how do you handle them when they get moody or scream for attention?

Would love to hear your daily routines and any tips you wish you knew when you first started. I’m really trying to give my bird the best life possible. Looking forward to learning from you all!

Again, welcome to the forum! It sounds like you’re already doing an amazing job, your routine is honestly spot on for a new grey owner.

Rotating toys every 1–2 weeks really helps keep African grey mentally stimulated, and even short daily training/bonding sessions make a big difference. I usually aim for a few hours of interaction spread through the day, even if it’s just talking to them or letting them be near me while I’m doing things.

Moodiness and screaming are pretty normal, I’ve found keeping a calm routine and not rewarding the screaming with instant attention really helps. You’re clearly very dedicated, and your grey is lucky to have you! Looking forward to seeing more of your journey here.
