My African Grey Has Suddenly Gone Quiet — Should I Be Worried?

Hey everyone, new here!

I really need some advice from experienced African Grey owners, because I’m starting to get a bit worried and could use some honest input.

My Grey has been acting a little different lately — quieter than usual, not talking as much, and seems less interested in toys or coming out of the cage. He’s eating, but not as excited about food as he normally is. I’ve checked his droppings and they look fine, and his feathers still look healthy. It’s just his mood and behavior that seem off.
I’m not sure if it’s something medical, hormonal, or maybe he’s just bored or stressed. The temperature and routine at home haven’t changed, and I try to give him plenty of attention every day. Has anyone here seen their African Grey go through a phase like this? Could this be a sign of something serious, or maybe just a seasonal/hormonal change?

Any advice or personal experiences would really help. I love this bird more than anything, and I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing for him. ❤️
Has anyone else’s Grey suddenly gone quiet or withdrawn for a while?

Hey there, welcome to the forum! :)

It’s completely understandable to feel worried when a Grey suddenly becomes quiet, these birds have such strong personalities that even small changes can feel huge. From what you’ve described, it could be something mild like a mood shift, boredom, or a temporary hormonal phase, because Greys do go through ups and downs just like we do.

But at the same time, any sudden change in behavior is worth keeping an eye on. Even if droppings and feathers look normal, birds can hide illness really well. I’d suggest watching him closely for the next day or two, and if he’s still unusually quiet, a quick check-up with an avian vet can give you peace of mind.

In the meantime, try offering something new — a different toy, a foraging activity, or even a change in routine. Sometimes that little spark of excitement brings them right back to themselves.

You’re clearly very attentive and caring, and that alone makes a huge difference. Please keep us posted on how he’s doing. ❤️
