Is it normal for African Greys to “freeze and stare” for a few seconds?

Hi beautiful grey owners

I recently noticed something interesting with my African Grey and I wanted to ask if other owners experience the same thing.

Sometimes he will suddenly go completely still and just stare at me or around the room. His body looks frozen, eyes wide, and he barely blinks. It usually lasts like 5–10 seconds and then he goes back to normal like nothing happened.

At first I thought maybe something scared him, but it also happens when everything is calm and quiet. No loud noises, no sudden movements. It almost looks like he’s “processing” something or deep in thought 😂

Is this normal Grey behavior?
Is it curiosity, alert mode, or some kind of instinct thing?

I’m still learning to understand their body language better, so any insights from experienced owners would really help. Would love to hear what your Greys do when they act like little statues!

Thanks in advance!

Totally normal 😊 It’s usually just their alert/curious mode kicking in. They’re super intelligent and tend to pause and “analyze” their surroundings like tiny feathered CCTV cameras :D

As long as he’s acting normal before and after (eating well, active, vocal, playful), it’s nothing to worry about. Greys are just very observant and dramatic thinkers sometimes. My friend's grey also freezes like that when he hears a faint sound or is deciding if something is suspicious.

Honestly it’s one of their cutest quirks! You’ll start noticing more funny little habits as you get to know him better.
