How Much Should You REALLY Pay for an African Grey Parrot in 2025?

Hey everyone! 👋

I’ve had my Congo African Grey for a little over 3 years now, and I’m still learning new things about these insanely smart birds every day. I wanted to share my experience (and hear yours!) about African Grey parrot food, care, and the real costs of keeping one of these feathered geniuses happy.

When I first got my “pretty bird” (that’s literally what she calls herself 😂), I was feeding her mostly seeds because that’s what the pet store recommended. BIG mistake. Within a few months, her feathers started looking dull and she was acting cranky. I did some research and switched her to Pretty Bird African Grey Parrot Food — and wow, what a difference. Her feathers got glossier, she became more talkative, and she even started mimicking my ringtone again.

Now I mix pellets with fresh fruits, veggies, and the occasional nut. If anyone’s wondering what to feed an African Grey, here’s my current rotation:
  • Morning: Pellets (Pretty Bird or Zupreem)
  • Lunch: Small piece of apple, banana, or papaya
  • Dinner: Veggies (broccoli, carrots, peas, corn)
  • Treats: Almonds or walnuts (once a day)
I’ve also been careful with calcium — I give a cuttle bone and sprinkle calcium powder occasionally because I heard it helps prevent issues like hypocalcemia that Greys can be prone to.

As for African Grey care, honestly, the food is only half the story. These birds are so emotional and intelligent that they need tons of stimulation. I rotate toys weekly, play sounds from YouTube (rainforest sounds are her favorite), and talk to her like she’s part of the family. If I skip a few days, she lets me know — loudly 😅.

Now the money talk 💸 — for anyone searching “African Grey how much” or “birds for sale African Grey,” I spent around $2,500 on mine from a local breeder, and I’ve seen prices go up to $4,000+ lately depending on the breeder and talking ability. So if you’re planning to buy an African Grey, make sure it’s from a trusted source — not an online “cheap deal” that could be a scam or involve wild-caught birds.

And finally, about the lifespan of African Grey parrots — this blew my mind. With proper care, they can live 50–60 years, sometimes longer! So you’re basically committing to a lifelong feathery companion (or as my wife says, a talkative toddler that never moves out 😂).

Anyway, that’s my experience so far. Would love to hear how you all feed your Greys and what foods your birds absolutely love (or refuse to touch).

Do you think Pretty Bird food is still the best, or have you found a better option lately?

Cheers,
Pedro
