Choosing the Perfect Travel Cage for African Grey Parrot (Size, Safety & Real Owner Reviews)

Hey everyone,

Just saw yet another post from a panicked new owner whose Grey almost escaped mid-drive because the “large bird carrier” from the big-box store had a latch a 5-year-old could open. Made me realize we need a proper pinned thread about choosing the perfect travel cage for African Grey Parrot – because the wrong one can turn a simple vet visit into a nightmare.

I’ve done dozens of car trips (2–10 hours), a couple of 4-hour flights, and countless short hops with both Congo and Timneh Greys (rescues and boarders). Here’s what actually works in the real world:

Non-negotiable rules I never break

  • Minimum interior space: 18" × 18" × 24" for Congos, 16" × 16" × 20" for Timnehs (anything smaller and wings can’t open = stress city)
  • Bar spacing: ¾" to max 1" – wider and they stick their head through
  • Bar thickness & material: powder-coated steel or stainless only. Cheap wire bends in 30 seconds when a determined Grey decides it’s playtime.
  • Door security: at least two separate locks or screw-down latches. Bonus points if you add zip-ties or carabiners.
My personal ranking after years of trial and error
  1. King’s Cages Aluminum Travel Cage (24x18x20)Lightweight (around 10 lbs), airline IATA-approved, literally indestructible. Worth every penny if you fly or do long trips.
  2. A&E Flight Cage / Travel VersionFolds flat, huge front door, rock-solid locks. My everyday go-to for car rides under 6 hours.
  3. Caitec Perch & Go (clear polycarbonate)Brilliant for short vet runs – they can see out, less panic, easy to clean. Not for long trips though.
  4. Yaheetech 24" Rolling Travel CageBest budget option right now (usually $90–110). Tons of members here use it and love it. Just reinforce the door with zip-ties the first time.
  5. Prevue Hendryx Travel CageDecent starter, but upgrade the water bowls and add extra locks.
Pro tips that saved my sanity
  • Line the bottom with puppy pads + newspaper (nervous poops are real)
  • Attach a spill-proof water bottle and a small wooden perch at the right height
  • Dark towel over 3 sides once moving – cuts motion sickness and screaming dramatically
  • Do 3–5 “practice” 10-minute drives before any big trip
Biggest rookie mistake? Thinking a cat carrier or soft-sided dog bag is “good enough.” Greys chew through fabric in minutes and can injure themselves badly.
