Are Parrots Omnivores? Let’s Talk About What They Really Eat!

Hey everyone 👋

So here’s a question that pops up a lot among bird lovers — are parrots actually omnivores?

We always see them munching on fruits, seeds, and nuts like polite little vegans… but the truth is, parrots are technically omnivores. Yep — behind those colorful feathers and innocent faces, most parrots in the wild don’t mind a little protein snack once in a while.

In the wild, many species have been observed eating insects, larvae, and even small snails. It’s not that they’re out there hunting like hawks — more like, “Oh look, free protein crawling in my fruit bowl.” 😂

Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Herbivores eat only plants.
  • Carnivores eat meat.
  • Omnivores eat both — and parrots fit into that third category.
But before anyone runs off to serve their bird a steak dinner — no, they don’t need that! Their diet should still be mostly plant-based: fresh fruits, leafy greens, seeds, and pellets. A bit of boiled egg or insect protein can be offered occasionally, especially for breeding birds or during molting season when they need extra nutrition.

What’s funny is how diverse parrot diets are depending on where they live.

  • Lorikeets live off nectar and fruit — they’re basically the hummingbirds of the parrot world.
  • Macaws love nuts and clay (yes, clay — to neutralize toxins from fruits).
  • Cockatoos dig for roots and bugs like they’re running a mini construction company.
So yeah, turns out our feathered friends are not strict vegetarians — just balanced eaters with excellent taste. 😉

Now I’m curious — what do you all feed your parrots at home?
Do you ever give them a small protein treat, or do you stick to a fully vegetarian diet?
Would love to hear your thoughts and feeding experiences! 🥦🥚🐛
