Hey everyone
I’ve been seeing this question pop up a lot lately — “Are blue parrots extinct?” — and I thought it’s time we had a proper chat about it, because the answer is both yes and no, depending on which blue parrot you mean!
So, here’s the thing — not all blue parrots are gone. In fact, many species like Blue-and-Gold Macaws, Hyacinth Macaws, and Blue-headed Pionus are still very much alive, squawking, and chewing on furniture somewhere as we speak.
But… there’s one particular species that caused all the confusion: the Spix’s Macaw (also known as the “Little Blue Macaw”). This beautiful sky-blue bird from Brazil is the one that made headlines years ago after it was declared extinct in the wild. The news broke a lot of hearts — and even inspired the animated movie Rio.

The good news? They’re not completely extinct! Thanks to breeding programs and conservation efforts, there are still a few living in captivity, and scientists are working hard to reintroduce them back into the wild. Imagine the day when those bright blue wings fill the skies of Brazil again — it’ll be like hope taking flight.

What makes this topic even more interesting is how quickly misinformation spreads online. People see one sad post and suddenly think all blue parrots are gone forever. Nope — parrots are survivors. They’ve outlived pirates, deforestation, and even toddlers with sticky fingers.
So next time someone says, “Oh no, all the blue parrots are extinct!” — you can smile and tell them, “Not quite. They’re making a comeback.”
I’d love to hear your thoughts — have you ever seen a blue parrot in person? Or do you think humans are doing enough to protect endangered parrot species? Let’s talk about it below.
