Hello fellow African Grey Lovers!
Let’s talk about the one thing our feathered friends get really, really passionate about: food. As you might know, an African Grey's diet can make all the difference in their health, happiness, and enthusiasm for mimicking the most random phrases.
Let’s talk about the one thing our feathered friends get really, really passionate about: food. As you might know, an African Grey's diet can make all the difference in their health, happiness, and enthusiasm for mimicking the most random phrases.
So, what’s on the menu?
- Pellets – This should make up about 60-70% of your Grey’s diet. Look for high-quality brands with balanced nutrients – just be ready for the side-eye if they don’t like the flavor!
- Fresh Veggies & Fruits – Bring on the greens! Try leafy veggies like kale, spinach, and carrots, along with fruits like apple slices (minus the seeds) or a bit of banana. Avoid the big no-no’s: avocado, caffeine, chocolate, and anything too salty or sugary.
- Seeds & Nuts – Yes, Greys love these, but they’re more like the “treat” section. Think of seeds and nuts as the dessert or “special occasion” item. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing the delight in their eyes over a peanut?
- Grains – Brown rice, quinoa, and whole grains are also a great part of their diet, adding both variety and those carbs they secretly crave.
A Few Pro Tips:
- Mix it up: Our Greys get bored too. Switch up their food now and then for some excitement (and hopefully a few happy squawks).
- Keep it fresh: Old, stale pellets are a no-go. They know.
- Hydrate: Fresh water daily is a must!
