It's hard being a mother no matter, for both of you. Please let us know how it is going. The only experience I have had with eggs was my Nanday Conure, she popped out about 4 and let them lay at the bottom of the cage and wanted nothing to do with them. Made it very easy for both of us.
Maui laid her first egg around 25 yrs of age. Her vent was pretty swollen and kinda bloody. I tracked her weight and luckily she kept eating just fine. Her vent took a few days and returned to normal. She laid 5 eggs in that first batch. Like one egg every 1-2 days.
I hope Mitzi is okay. I wonder what triggered her to lay an egg this year. For Maui, it was the new, safe environment. I had only had her a couple of months, but she was given a more varied diet, she really took to me and she was allowed run of the house.
Thank you everyone. Mitzi has never been to the vet before. The vet was female which helped as Mitzi has always preferred females to males. After taking details from me the vet took her into another room to examine her so that Mitzi didn't associate anything with me. Mitzi didn't seem upset after so I think she did well. She actually said "hello" three times while she was in the carrier - once in the waiting room, then in the vet's room and then in the taxi coming home. She didn't have a temperature and the vet couldn't feel any sort of obstruction, so she isn't egg bound.
I don't know why she laid an egg, there haven't been any changes but she was intensely broody starting about 6 weeks ago.
I thought maybe Mitzi might have laid another egg this morning but she hasn't. I think her abdomen is slightly less swollen although it is difficult to tell as it is very swollen. The whole area is completely bald. Her vent is still messy and she is still plucking feathers out although not as many as yesterday.
