Hi my baby got so scared today because I purchased a new area rug. My husband and I were putting it down and she flew off her playstand onto the rug and was terrified. When I went to get her she was screaming at me but I was able to put her back in her cage until we finish. Shortly after when we were done I went to get her out and she went after my hand. After that I just softly spoke to her and told her everything is ok and gave her an almond her favorite 😃. I left her alone and tried to get her out in about an hour and half and she came willingly with no problem. I felt so bad that we scared her but all is well now.
Don't worry too much. This is very typical of African Greys, they can get spooked by anything new, either in the house, or by something you are wearing, or by new perches and toys.
I always tell mine if something is going to be moved or something new taken into the room but Mitzi usually still growls. A few weeks ago I took a little stepstool in to change a light bulb. Mitzi didn't notice at first but when she did she started growling loudly and she continued even after I had taken it away again.
Somewhere in another universe, dear brother, you got saved.
With my birds you never know what will be scary or not. I bought Chyloe a toy that was bigger than her and she immediately jumped on it to destroy it. However, when I take her perches out to clean them and put them back, she is afraid of them even though they are the same ones she always had.
We bought a new fridge while we had our first grey. When the men brought it into the kitchen, they passed by the opening to the family room where we have the grey's cage. The men were making grunting noises as they manoeuvred the fridge into the kitchen. Instead of being afraid of the huge fridge passing in front of him, my grey shouted to the men saying, "What's your problem". They had to laugh when they realized it was a bird talking to them.
