My friends were giving away their 10 years old grey, and I liked him so much that I took him. He is very social and loves people, but they never let him out of the cage because he had a negative experience with wings clipping at young age and he started biting. I read numerous articles and I know that life in the cage is depressing. So, my question is how do I let him out for the 1st time? And what do I do if he doesn't want to come back to the cage? I also have 2 adult cats who don't seem to care about him, but I know I need to supervise him being out 100% of time.
You say he loves people? Will he step up on your hand? I would open the cage and let him leave at his own pace, it may be something that will take him time to decide what to do, depending on how many people are around. A calm and subdued atmosphere would be best for his first time outside. Noisy, unpredictable children could scare him. Is there a space on the top of the cage for him? Can he fly? The cats may seem to ignore him, but once he's out of the cage, I would keep an eye on them. My grey loves to interact with dogs and cats, which is mostly chasing them and showing them she is the boss.
You can try and give him his favorite treats to entice him back in the cage. It will be an adventure, for you and your grey! Let us know how it goes.
